16 Years on the Internet

Happy Friday Night...  So after the show on Wednesday, Steve Golson and I went out for dinner... we were talking about keeping track of yourself on the internet (i have a couple of 'google news alerts' for my name and the Schnauzer Logic show name, but Steve mentioned that Google Groups also keeps track of almost every post to the old "usenet"...  so i just went sniffing round, looking for old accounts...

The Internet Wayback Machine shows my first web page on October 18, 1996 (not Schnauzer Logic...  that shows up on June 19, 2000).

BUT searching for pre-California domains I found a message I posted from my account at Software Tool and Die in Brookline, Massachusetts (who are still around, amazingly, as The World) on February 6, 1992

Unfortunately, the ViewSonic 6 IS NOT an autosizing monitor (this is straight
from ViewSonic).  The problem you describe is particularly noticable when you
change from different scan frequencies.  According to VS "That's why we put
the controls in the front!"  I have recently purchased 5 VS6's for my office
for use with TSENG 4000 OEM video boards and they all have the same "problem".
With respect to VMODE, do you have a utility called DMODE?  This came with my
OEM video board and lets you set default scan frequencies.

-----

I know...  not so interesting (hard to remember I was an expert on the TSENG 4000 video card and chip set!), but I received an email tonight from someone inquiring about purchasing one of my other (older domains) and it got me to thinking about how long I've lived on the web.  (Modern web...  I did have accounts in 1975 on the DARPA MDL machine at MIT where I could issue commands like TELNET 20 (!) and at DEC in 1985 when I first started to use DECMail and All-In One and USENET, but those were all pre-HTTP)

So i'm not as old as John McCain, but in Internet Years, I'm old!Laughing

Hey, happy birthday! I got on the 'net around the same time you did. I got my first Internet account around Sept '91. I didn't log into it for several weeks, and when I finally did, the only thing I used it for was e-mailing my friends in other universities. I hardly understood anything about it, like how far it reached, or to how many points of entry it had, or even the medium that would connect peers.
